Royton and Crompton E-Act Academy remains partially closed after coronavirus case

ROYTON and Crompton E-ACT Academy remains closed to the majority of its pupils and staff after an individual in the school tested positive for coronavirus.

The academy announced on its website that it would close on Monday, March 9 for a deep clean after the confirmed case of the disease.

Now in an updated message online, headteacher Andrea Atkinson said the academy has re-opened for Year 11 students but will not reopen fully until Monday, March 16.

She wrote: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of the academy – it is greatly appreciated.

“A deep clean of the rest of the academy site will continue during the remainder of this week so that all students can return to the academy on Monday, March 16.

“Our number one priority is the wellbeing of our students and staff. We believe that these actions, which go above and beyond the recommendations made to us by Public Health England, have minimised the risk to our students, staff and the wider academy community.

“While the academy is closed, parents and carers should visit the academy website for updates. You can also contact us with any questions using the email address eraca.enquiry@e-act.org.uk.

“We have been working closely with Public Health England officials who have advised that if any of our students or staff show any symptoms of the virus which include fever, cough and difficulty breathing, they should call NHS 111 for advice.

“Public Health England is currently contacting people who may have had close contact with any confirmed cases. They will be given health advice about symptoms and emergency contact details to use if they become unwell.”

Arrangements for Year 11 students on Wednesday, March 11

The academy will be open from 8am for all students taking the health and fitness examination

The academy will be open for the rest of Year 11 from 11am

Lunch will be provided and drinks for all students from approximately 1pm

The school day will finish at 2.30pm

Arrangements for students and staff this week

Tuesday, March 10: academy to remain closed to all students whilst priority areas within the academy are deep cleaned

Wednesday, March 11: all Year 11 students to return to academy

Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13: all year 11 students to start at 9am and finish at 2.30pm

Monday, March 16: all students to return to academy.

Five people have now been diagnosed with COVID-19 (coronavirus) in Oldham. In the latest case announced on Thursday, March 12, the source of infection is currently unknown.

Public Health England is currently tracing people who have had contact with the individual.

Typical symptoms of coronavirus include fever and a cough that may progress to a severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

Generally, coronavirus can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

Anyone worried about their symptoms or those of a family member or colleague, should contact the NHS 111 service online https://111.nhs.uk/covid-19 or call 111.

They should not go to their GP or other healthcare facility.

Precautions to help prevent the spread of coronavirus include are:

  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
  • put used tissues in the bin immediately.
  • wash your hands with soap and water often – use hand sanitiser gel (with an alcohol content of at least 60%) if soap and water are not available
  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
  • don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
